One great advancement in dental technology has come in the form of intraoral cameras and scanners. Our small cameras allow us to take photos of otherwise hard to view areas, helping us monitor teeth and tissue over time. Intraoral photos are also a great way to help educate patients about areas that could use additional attention when brushing and flossing. Photos do not emit any radiation and can be stored indefinitely as part of a patient record.
In our office we also utilize an intraoral scanner when fabricating crowns, bridges, dentures, and implant restorations. Intraoral scanning has replaced the need for taking most conventional impressions which can be uncomfortable for patients and less accurate. Before we’d have to mail a physical impression to a lab on the mainland which could take 3-5 days to arrive and could distort if the temperature was too high. By using a digital scanner we’re able to communicate directly with our dental labs which reduces the time it takes to make a restoration and improves the overall fit.
