Fillings are recommended when a tooth has either a new cavity or what we call a “recurrent” cavity which is a cavity that forms around an existing filling. We also use fillings to bond teeth that are chipped or cracked. Fillings are a one visit procedure.
In our office we primarily place composite, commonly referred to as “tooth colored” or “white”, fillings. Amalgam restorations, as known as “silver fillings” are still placed occasionally but thanks to advancements in technology composite restorations can be placed and expected to last just as long as amalgam restorations. The benefits to a composite restoration include better aesthetics, the ability to be more conservative with preparation, and immediate setting. Composite restorations come in multiple shades and we strive to try to match it as closely as possible to your existing tooth color.
